The Head Buried In the Sand

The Head Buried in the Sand By Elton Camp An ostrich never buries his head in the sand To do that symbolically is only done by man And the deep sand that is the easiest to reach Is that located all along this country’s beach For this present write there certainly is a reason It’s because we have entered hurricane season To support folks who build houses at the shore Is a thing we shouldn’t be willing to do anymore A good enough excuse they can’t possibly give For building in a place clearly too unsafe to live Since it is at the ocean’s edge you intend to stay You have to expect a hurricane to blow you away It’s like one who wants to live on a volcano’s slope Because anyone who would do that has to be a dope If I choose to build my house at the brink of a ledge, Why should others pay when it falls over the edge Likely, some who read this likely will react in anger And argue that every place is also filled with danger Some spots represent taking an unreasonable chance No wonder that insurance companies look askance If it is at the beach that some are determined to stay When disaster strikes there needs to be another way If that ridiculous risk they decide they want to take, Then nobody else should help to pay for their mistake

I live 5 miles inland from the beach in NC. Far enough away that hurrican waters will not reach me but close enough to enjoy the beach when I want. I don't understand those that live on the edge of disaster. Mike
