The Green Eyed Son
"What does the future hold?", said he.
"I do not care for things long past."
"Ah, but who is to say?", said she.
"It is written the die is cast."
"I see a lass with brownest eyes -
"A sad, sad face from long ago.
"I see the tears from hearing lies
"And asking why she loved him so."
"I see eyes of the palest blue
"That stare afar, but do not see.
"Lips that should smile but never do,
"Hoping that love will set her free."
"Ah, but then there are eyes of green!
"A look I have not seen before!
"I see the future - it is mean.
"And death is what I see in store!"
"The woman is with child, my son.
"Her anger curls a strong man's toes.
"If you would live then you must run -
"You have not seen these kinds of woes."
They say the border was too far.
A green eyed storm swallowed him whole.
He is buried where others are
Who lie deep with a tortured soul.
A green eyed son was born that Spring,
A model of Law and Order.
But deep inside there is some "thing"
That pulls him toward the border.
