The Great Achiever
“Agha Ojadili”
(The Great Achiever)
Dance steps reverberate in the square
We celebrate a feasting festival
A special festival of achievement
Albeit of a silent kind
Animated bodies writhe in rhythm
To ecstatic drumbeats and “udu”
The “oja”, reeling out praise names
Of none other than the achiever’s
Failure it says, is orphaned
But success, a dozen kinsmen
Several toes tip and push
To behold “Ojadili”, who overcame
In his honour maidens display
The sacred dance of maiden-ness
A silent shouting contest
To woo him you may ask
The spirits bow in shame
He came, saw and conquered
Desecrated their invincibility
But, stood tall to tell the tale
Rejoice, rejoice you tribesmen
An epoch has just commenced
Reach the crescendo of ecstasy
Rippling muscles and chests
Beware! Be on guard “Ojadili”!
The soloist “Oja” rings aloud clearly
The war is fought, won and kept
The two you did and the third?
