The Grass Grows Long

A scent of panic in the air The taste of gunfire everywhere The ground is littered with despair Heroes' nightmares lit by flares Tanks burning in the mud Fallen troops oozing blood Cries and shouts split the skies Forlorn pleas to stay good-byes Years pass, the grass grows long Battles fade to maudlin songs Earth returns to timeless glory Stilling whispers of all things gory

You really could feel the pain of war in your words...I wish men wouldn't forget and we'd have less war...

Great wish...For some reason our selective memory 'weeds out' what is unpleasant... and off goes a new generation to yet another war... The way of the world... Much as with nuclear disarmament: The scare that Kruschev and Kennedy experienced, which compelled them to talk, has been forgotten... with tragic consequences. Thanks for your fine comment, Jeanne. ~ Gershon

i think they fade because the era is gone and it's no longer fresh in the minds of those who lived it...we all remember 911 but the kids born then are now 18...it will be forgotten as well all pass.... good write, powerful piece :) hugs

I think so too... I guess I had in mind Civil War, WW1 and WW2 battlefields. Thanks, Gershon

Hello Gershon … while we celebrate our heroes of war we tend to forget what terror people go through and then it all starts again - when will we ever learn - thank you Gershon - Lindsay

You're right, Lindsay. I'm afraid that the grass grows over our memories too. Thanks for the insight, Lindsay! ~ Gershon

A fave already! How quickly fades one after death...the book is closed. Imagery wonderful...filled with sadness. Great job, my friend, on such a sad subject.
