The Girl In the Hat

THE GIRL IN THE HAT
The beauty that invades my sleep at night
for all my life, as I lie helplessly,
is all I really loved, and loved her right
forever though she's just a memory.

She taught me how to kiss, and do it well
when just a brat she'd only tolerate,
and older was she than my mind can tell
but love she found would not let her to wait;

how much in love was I--she never knew
near ev'ry night the truth hangs in my throat
to tell her as her eyes probe deep into
the very soul of me and sings most eve'ry note.

Not many things in life go quite so well
as we have found in dreams I never tell.
