The Girl

The girl in the gold-rimmed spectacles
Lips red bright
Face that once was alive
Now show the lines
That life betrayed
Flowing blond hair
But not below

The guy in the ten-bob suit
Hitting his final pursuit
Marriage past the rocks stage
Showing his age
Just wants a woman
Just wants to re-engage
Turn the page

The girl in the gold rimmed spectacles
The guy in the ten bob suit
Life gave them the same road
They were always destined to meet
Lips red bright
Her flowing blond hair
But not below

The guy in the ten-Bob suit
Fifty quid discrete
He didn’t really care
When he got downstairs
The knife entered his neck
Taking him further away
The girl in the gold-rimmed spectacles
Lips red bright
Her flowing blond hair
But not below.
Not below.

Paul, this is dark, cinematic, and full of intrigue. The repetition of “The girl in the gold-rimmed spectacles” creates a haunting rhythm, almost like scenes replaying in the reader’s mind. I especially admired how you built tension through vivid character snapshots before delivering such a sharp, unexpected turn. This one has the feel of noir storytelling—gritty, unsettling, and memorable. Nicely done.
