The Gift of Light

Corruption breeds in a pot of flowers
Darkness does not begin as darkness
It's what happens when all the light bleeds out
And there's nothing left but a void

This darkness spreads slowly
And it corrupts ever so slightly over time
A sad day here and there
Turns to lashing out in anger

This darkness even seeps into the roots
And becomes so ingrained it blends
But even these shadows can be defeated
By the radiance of a smile

Given enough time the shadows will slip away
Until the roots are once again pure
And happiness rules over a fractured heart
With light flooding in to make it a beacon for others
