The Future Shall Paint Us Invisible
The past has always been a foreign country,
step four decades into the future
and you will be an alien to your ancestors.
Many mothers have lost their babies to remorseless time.
The ancients looked like us
but they would not recognize our manners and mores
as even remotely human.
Maybe that is why wars continue to erupt.
We don't trust history, it takes sides,
and time takes no prisoners.
Empathy needs to be a living force
not a dead letter.
'Let us not forget' translates as 'let us not acknowledge'
that the past wipes out legions of human beings,
their humanity is a fading cloth.
This country of ours we make and remake
with foreign hands and minds,
even yesterday is a stranger to today.
Our children will remember us
until a new-made world demands they forget.
