The Fourth of July

That Fourth of July will always be
Embedded in my memory.
It started as many had been before
With happy plans and fun in store.

Our children then were almost grown
Each one had outings of his/her own.
Just one final office job to do
And then a day of just we two.

I left the house in full good cheer
Leaving behind those held most dear.
Engrossed in work, I was alone
Until the jangling of the phone.

That one short call would change my life
A widow now, not a happy wife.
So now you know the reason why
I often cry on the Fourth of July.

The last stanza through me for a loop. I never expected so much pain infused so quickly. Your poem is so powerful and creates an image all of us must face all to soon. The expression of emotion is beyond comprehension.

Oh My Goodness Joyce, That is terrible-It is good that you wrote about it though. Writing helps in the healing process-This is a beautiful poem of rememberance!~Tirzah~
