Notes About The Poem

For all those who bravely gave their lives so we could live freely and yet have been forgotten.

The Forgotten

Winter weeps in shallow graves
                                 Whose lives remain below
                                 No marker at their head
                                 No marker at their toe

                                 Whose lives remain below
                                 Courage, their mantra
                                 No marker at their toe
                                 A charge for freedom

                                Courage, their mantra
                                Honoring our country
                                A charge for freedom
                                With dignity and respect

                               Honoring our country
                               No marker at their head
                               With dignity and respect
                               Winter weeps in shallow graves

Your first line giving winter a human bend drew me into this fine piece. Well penned! A creative Pantoum indeed. Best wishes, Brian

The lines are short and then I realized I was reading a pantoum, I really like it. The message is a solemn one and well expressed.

A nicely written Pantoum, Paulette. Filled with emotion, and honor for the brave soldiers who have given their all. For us. For the freedom we enjoy. Thanks for sharing.

Your poem goes straight to my heart. Thinking of our men and women resting in "shallow graves" is so painful. You're truly an awesome writer to create such emotion. A powerful poem written beautifully.

Hi Carolyn, Thank you, and yes it does come from my heart. I look at our world and see so many ungrateful people who are endowed with the rights of freedom yet don't have a clue. Take Care.

I wrote a poem with the same title but it ain't nothing like this. Don't even get me started about our veterans. We owe them more than we can ever repay. Nice write, Paulette:)

Hi Daniel, I appreciate your comment and as you can see I am with you re: our vets. So many people don't get it.....blinded by entitlement without ever thinking about how they have come to be so fortunate. Freedom isn't free, so many have lost their lives for you and me!!!!! Feel free to tell me your thoughts....are you a vet?
