The Flower: Grevillea buxifolia

This grevillea flower
is like a hairy Huntsman spider
lying up-side-down.

Delicate pink appendages,
fuzzed and curled,
make awkward question marks
from those posing bendy legs.

Will the next hairy Huntsman then,
seem a fuzzy flower
with curvy pistil tubes?

Perhaps...

if it is dead...

But, maybe that’s too sad.

It must be fun to run that way:
'BOO' it seems to say to me,
just to make me jump.

This is a wonderfully playful poem that finds humour and imagination in the natural world. The clever comparison between the grevillea flower and a spider invites us to see familiar things in a fresh and unexpected way. I love the gentle twist at the end—the flower becomes almost mischievous, reminding us to keep a sense of curiosity and wonder.

Thanks for your kind comment. The common name for this flower is a spider flower :)

I had not heard of this flower and had to look it up, your words fit it perfectly. Nicely written, Jeanette.
