Notes About The Poem

The Fleeced made Golden

,
"The Fleeced made Golden"

That bluebird in my heart
paints a different tune;
the Sun-tainted canary is set free
amongst the murderous crows,
a test to light scarlet matches
in the refined golden air
the flock poetically breathes in,
much purer than black sheep,
who continually march against the flow,
watched on by the immersed, those ...
hungry wolves, smiling like hidden kings
forever fleeced like lambs in sheep clothes

Candide Diderot. ‘25

“Nature is to zoos as God is to churches.”
Margaret Attwood

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I took the one most travelled by. It was littered with corpses, as such roads are. But as you will have noticed, my own corpse is not among them.”
Margaret Attwood

"We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories.” Margaret Attwood

“If it's a story I'm telling, then I have control over the ending... But if it's a story, even in my head, I must be telling it to someone. You don't tell a story only to yourself. There's always someone else. Even when there is no one.” “All stories are about wolves. All worth repeating, that is. Anything else is sentimental drivel." --- "All of them?"

"Sure", he says. "Think about it. There's escaping from the wolves, fighting the wolves, capturing the wolves, taming the wolves. Being thrown to the wolves, or throwing others to the wolves so the wolves will eat them instead of you. Running with the wolf pack. Turning into a wolf. Best of all, turning into the head wolf. No other decent stories exist.” Margaret Attwood
