Notes About The Poem

I have written this so many times, and am comfortable with this version.  I suppose most people can determine my leanings.

The Flame

The Flame
Kevin Davis 2025

Open the door where death and life align,
What spirits linger, what truths are divine?
Open your mind where justice meets disguise,
What dreams endure, what deceit belies?

Open your heart to the clash of chains and wings,
What freedom cries, what tyranny stings?
Open your soul, where hatred turns to dust,
What love endures, what beliefs do you trust?

So, open yourself to our cherished decree,
To guard the flame of democracy.
Stand for truth, let your voices toll,
Demand that our Constitution remain forever whole.

For laws are only parchment until a people rise,
And liberty is fragile when apathy complies.
But courage, once spoken, can rattle the throne,
And a single clear voice can become a nation’s own.

Let reason be your lantern, compassion be your guide,
Let justice walk beside you, unwavering in stride.
For the promise of a nation is not written in stone—
It lives in its people; in the choices they own.

So, lift up your spirit, let conviction ignite,
Stand guard at the threshold between darkness and light.
For democracy endures where its guardians stand,
With open hearts, open minds, and unwavering hands.
