The Final Fight
A young girl sits
on the stairs and cries
gaping at the round
dark circle coiled around
her mother's eye.
Her father
having slapped
the puzzled cat
is now slouched forward
on the sofa.
his half full gin
swallowed by
the shoddy carpet.
There's a hole
in the bathroom door
the size of a fist.
She knows the time
to leave has come.
Frail as parchment;
walks slowly up
well worn stairs;
opens the nightstand drawer
Joyfully exploring
his loaded gun.
