The End of Me

Shivering within my fears
Feigning strength behind the tears
My gaze turned something near demonic
A fractured soul inside this tonic

The poisoned draught of hell
Still seems to serve me well
Bestowing some unholy feeling
A mimicry of borrowed healing

Spinning through a fevered sound
Collapsing, crumpled, to the ground
Lying in my own decay
Yet streaking bright, then burning away

It’s the purest kind of sin
So, I draw the poison in
Just as potent as before
Still trembling on the frozen floor

I watch my languid life
Remembering the edge of that knife
I tossed it gently on the chair
As though it never mattered there

I could not end it
And cannot mend it
It’s hard to live
But I won’t give

I’m selfish and deceitful
Corroded, still regretful
I’ve lost the place where I began
Beneath the drone of the ceiling fan

I don’t know if I’ll ever stop
So, I take the pills—another drop
Past my lips, down to my core
Barricading thoughts behind a war

I used to be your porcelain display
Now I vanish, day by day
I cannot let you—least of all—see
The quiet violence I do to me

It started small, with lesser things
Until I bartered off my wings
Traded flesh to chase the high
Tell me—did I choose to die?

I know that I will
These drugs, how they kill
I ache to quit
Just one more hit

Forget the past
Could this be the last?
These drugs make me feel free
Because they’ll be the end of me

This is so sad. My dear cousin battled alcohal and drug addiction, he refused to accept the fact that Jesus so loved him, he told me that he knew Christ died for our sins, but he felt somehow, he did not deserve the grace and forgiveness of the heavenly Father, through the atonement of sin through His Son. Your poem is raw, and reminds me of the struggles he had. I pray and beg God for those going through this same ordeal. I love your poem A Child's Prayer. There is healing in the love of God.

Thank you for sharing something so personal and painful with me. I’m deeply sorry for the loss and struggles your cousin endured. *The End of Me* was written from a very raw and honest place, so knowing it resonated with your experience means a great deal. And thank you for your kind words about *A Child’s Prayer* as well—I believe, as you do, that there is healing in God’s love and grace. Warmly, Jennifer
