The End of America

"The End of America"

remember
when
we danced
our fingers
mapping
velvet secrets
across scorched
skin whispering
smiles encouraging
a little lovely
wanton sin
like we were
playing keys
turning our
worlds over
for words
unlocking
hearts
you could
taste the
salt pools
satin tongues
like book marks
parked in life
tidal pulsing
swelling over
into musky curves
bittersweet
like toffee
we melted
into double helix
spoons
shuffling sides
bending
over like
music sybaritic
needle piercing
into groove
deep stirred
we thought
we could
write
the whole thing
like a never-ending
sticky noir romance
tasting honey
in each other
we burned
like a forest fire
fathoms deep
into what
was encased
in our bodies
our truth
torched
like Liberty
falling
then our world
changed
war soft shoed
it’s blood dripping
lips around the
throbbing dreams
of our forgotten youth

we swallowed
gagging
on the truth

over all too soon
pass the tissues
wiped clean

and senseless

we left the room
before what slept
opened its eyes
rudely waking

I had a moment...I'm not sure if it was pleasant or not....

Intrigued by the multiple layers here. You haven't missed a beat.

Yes, good poet, one can lose themselves in the multiverse of layers, never to return. Perhaps a good thing. Perhaps not. We all find ourselves there eventually. Some say Life is a constant war, where we are all looking for some kind of baptism to make it through the dark into the light. Some light, Love Letters to the Soul.

The original primary video embedded in the poem, was visual from America and the world at war during WWII. Vision in that music video depicted the historical use of Nuclear weapons in its infancy during the war with Japan. The poem itself was influenced by the thoughts emanating from the Italian movie "Malena" (2000), along with the initial music video I had embedded. As that video is no longer available, I have replaced it with the video of the same song, using visual excerpts from the movie, "Malena". At time of writing this poem, I had also been watching documentaries on Oppenheimer. I have yet to watch the 2022/23 movie, "Oppenheimer".

"To End All War: Oppenheimer & the Atomic Bomb is a feature documentary exploring how one man’s brilliance, hubris and relentless drive changed the nature of war forever… led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and unleashed mass hysteria… and how, subsequently, the same man’s attempts to contain the fallout of his invention made him a pariah and led him down a path of deep despair."

Primary video excerpts from the Italian movie, "Malèna" (2000). Whilst set in Italy during the 2nd World War, the story plot is complex, the viewpoint of a child in an adult's world, societal views, truth, lies, false judgement, war, life/death, dark/light, romance, coming-of-age, beauty, ugliness, La Dolce Vita; there are sub-levels on every level, with a succinct message. I was influenced and impressed to write the poem from the thoughts the movie left with me (compared to contemporary societal views, events and personal experience from childhood thoughts and experiences to that of current maturity and experience). The visuals from the entire movie stunningly and provocatively shot. Charming, with ever present humour and the depth and gravity of drama. Italian (subtitled). Beautiful movie.
