The Echoes of a Supreme Lie
The most unsettling sound
is the sound of work shoes
pounding on a hardwood floor.
It's a sound that may harbor a hug or violence.
The sound of authority and mundane chores.
It's the sound of fatigue and routine.
A sound without middle ground.
I grew up in dwellings where it was a rule
to take our shoes off in the mudroom...
So, all the footfalls sounded the same.
Cotton feet whispering - unthreatening
Soft footfalls can harbor the echoes
of a supreme flavor of deception.
