Tiger lily Cana lily
From deep inside me there wells up the desire
I can feel a poem coming into my mind
It escapes the ruts so deeply grooved in my brain
It wants to be written down for others to read
Then some noise, some person, or Hairy
Demand attention or answers or food
The desire floats down, down to the bottom
There it lies in the rut being trampled by what?
The needs of others, life in general, fatigue
Oh! The fatigue, I hate it, but life is better than giving up
I would desire the energy of youth but my heart
Would play out sooner, but maybe a shorter life well lived?
I don't know only God knows what is best for me
I will let him decide when it is my time to go
In the time left here I will write about what I know
A brown thrasher or whip-poor-will or the dove's coo
Maybe a spider on my window sill
Or the tiger lilies reaching higher and higher
Seeking the sun so they can open up their blossoms
Of beautiful orange and draw hummingbirds, butterflies
Just outside my kitchen view there are those beauties
Like the lilies and I can think of haiku
Sonnets and sometimes you
Each one of you my poet friends
