The Day You Promised

The day you promised to me in that call, The new city you'd left us for in the fall. "The education there is great," you say, "And the sights are worth staring at all day." Still, Mother and I, we aren't too sure If all of the things there are truly pure. Drowning in money, floating in fame, We would never go back to being the same. You gave us the oath to soon be back And put our dead lives right on track. The day you promised to step through that door To revisit the little girl that you adore. I waited and dreamed and wouldn't let go Of the thought that left my eyes aglow I checked the calendar everyday Waiting for me to be able to say "My daddy is home! He is finally back!" At last there's somebody to fix the crack It's streaked across my heart from when Momma had told me my birth was a sin. The day you promised to relive our lives The way it was before the cries. It's finally today, a whole year later I sprint off the bus and pass the skater And I don't stop until I eventually reach That tree that holds a single peach. I swing open the door and close it inside There's no sound to be muted, no places to hide. So I sit and wait for your weary return But I slowly begin to feel my body burn. I should've known as I quietly laid In the darkened, bleak, and heavy night shade No bother to eat, no bother to shower Just waiting as my dried tears turned sour. My eyes watered again as I was forced to remember The faint days when we were all happy together. When all alone, I wondered "What's wrong? What did I do to make you stay gone?" I've finally learned, for Heaven's sake Promises made can easily break.
