Notes About The Poem

The Dandy of Lions

Cousin of the daisy, and born on summer's breeze,
It becomes a bright seedling of pale, green leaves.
In sunshine, it grows, as its edges become jagged,
Like a shooting star whose course goes zig-zagged!

Maturity brings longer leaves that spread around,
And milky roots that sink deeply into the ground.
When by some mystery calendar, at uncertain hour,
A lovely, yellow bloom captures you in its power!

The flower at last becomes a small, brown fruit,
For another generation is in summertime pursuit;
And the pappus disperses new seeds to the breeze,
To grow in foreign meadows and sunlit valleys!

Dandelions were once considered flowers, but their greed for water put them on the weed list, but never in my garden, lovely poem Evelyn . . . : )

I really enjoyed your poem Evelyn. I love dandelions and am fascinated that the word dandelions sounds like 'dents du lions' which practically translates to Lions teeth.

Evelyn, I love your title; I knew right away when I saw "daisy" what this was about. I love dandelions and nurture them for my happy bunnies.

Thank you for your encouraging comments, Caren! As to the poem's title, I actually came up with it after the poem was written. Although it's a tough weed, the dandelion is a real beauty. My mother always loved dandelions, so I grew to love them , too! In a way, she helped create this poem. I'll bet your bunnies are very happy indeed!

Evelyn, you couldn't have written your entry any better to give Line what she asked for and you managed to pay tribute to this wonderful flower so many frown upon as being a bothersome weed. Congratulations on your wonderful deserving win. This gem is going into my faves! : )
