The Dam

THE DAM

The dam held back the water and its power,
But then there came that hard, torrential shower;
As downward fell the devastating rain,
The dam began to weaken from the strain.
First just a crack, and then a hole or two
As water from behind came seeping through.
And then that deafening crumble and that thud,
And water uncontrolled became a flood.
It swept down in the valley there below
Destroying every place that it would go.
And just as quickly as it came that day,
The town to which it came was washed away.
The story’s sad, and yet so often true,
And yet it has a moral for us, too.
Our lives can be just like that holding dam,
We hold back what God wants to do and can.
But when our pride will crumble and we yield,
The power of God will rush through, and we’ll feel
The surging of it in our very soul
As He begins to take the full control.
And best of all, He only does what’s best
If we will simply put Him to the test.
No blunder, no mistake He’ll ever make
When we sell out to do things for His sake.
If we give, He will give it back again,
He’ll never be a debtor to a man.
If we live lives that please Him, we will see
That things we need He’ll give abundantly.
The promises are there for us to claim,
And all it takes is faith then in His name.
Yes, His power is much greater than that dam,
So let us trust in Him, the great I AM.
