Notes About The Poem
I wrote this about the hurt that has traveled through the women in my family and my silent hope that it ends with me. It's about seeing my mother's pain while wishing she could see mine, and still choosing to grow flowers from that pain. It expresses my acceptance that I cannot fix them or undo anyone's hurt, but I can choose what I pass on. I want LOVE to be what others inherit from me.

The Curse

The hurt that sits within your heart is the same that sits in mine.

But you can't feel my wounds at all, so I'll pretend to be just fine.

I'm breaking in ways I can't convey, but you can never tell.

I guess that's why you looked at me and bid me your farewell.

I often wonder to myself if I could ever escape the fall,

And wish you never had the chains around your heart at all.

I want to heal the hurt that sits deep beneath your feet,

The pain that came long before–our ancestors' defeat.

I want to take the ruins and grow flowers where there's weeds.

Some how I will break this curse–with my love and my good deeds.

There will be no other daughters who feel the same as I.

This curse will end with me, and here is where it dies.
