The Bullet

Over 50 years ago the draft almost took my brothers soul A Vietnam Battle that almost took his life On Sept 16th in the year of 1968 While out on patrol a sniper was lurking in a tree Pop was the sound that he heard that brought him to his knees An AK-47 was shot from high above and The bullet hit him in his head As he laid on the ground he could not make a single sound His voice had been taken away by this bullet on that day With his jugular sliced and blood all around He laid helpless on the ground. His Army buddy with the name of David, went to rescue him He drug him away to safety, a medic could see there was no hope to be, David beside himself and he could not believe his friends life Was coming to an end He pointed his weapon at the medic and said: You save my friend or, Your life will end. As they bent over to place him on the chopper gun fire then erupted The bullets just missing their heads and hit the chopper instead A 1/2 hour flight to Dang and no one knew, His jugular was ripped to shreds almost leaving him for dead The doctors could not believe their eyes, that he was still alive Sent to Japan to recover and a purple heart awaiting him With a tube down his nose for food so that he could eat A 10 inch scar down his neck yet, he never forgot for the rest of his life How David had saved his life, he has now passed away some 45 years later I only have one hero left, the one that saved my brothers life that day, I will carry on my brothers legacy and keep his friendship, Until my very last day.
