Notes About The Poem
  • The busing company I work for is nationwide so this could have been anywhere. Thankfully this event was not at my location.
  • This is a rant.
  • When an unattended child event happens, every adult on the bus gets fired, as they should. It is a company wide policy.

The Blue Light

A first grader somewhere today
was left alone on a bus,
unacceptable I say!
Riding a bus with the kids is fun
but, at my last stop my job is not done.
I can't return without a thorough search,
on each and every seat,
on the floor, in the isle or anywhere between.
The blue light was hung as a reminder
to search one more time
because a first grader alone on the bus today.
One time event is one time to many.

You are so compassionate about your kids on the bus, Miranda.

The kids on my bus are so wonderful except when they are not. I truly love my job. Having said that, however, some bus routes have much harder kids to deal with than others.

At my age, I detest buses. I've seen fights develop on buses. Still, leaving a child behind is terrible. Great observation.

Victor, your statement is one reason I'm glad I work with special needs students compared to with regular ed students. Although I am 100% certain that in the case I was talking about was a regular ed student.

Nice to bring this to light dear poet. Not just first grader, it is heaviest responsibility on the caretaker, happened many times in school trips, but we count them at each stop. I liked your thoughtful write today dear poet. Bus policy is commendable.

I've been a bus monitor for 8 and a half years now and love my job. When stoies like this happen a blue light is hung up and turned on so it gets talked about and attention given to it. My job is simply fantastic! Thanks.
