The Beating Heart

I remember reading in school
Of the “Tell tale heart”
I read with a lump in my throat
Hardly breathing
A story that was so cruel
The intensity of which it beat
To inform others of the wrong
That was done

The beating so loud
To the one that had wounded it
Makes me wonder
Does it happen now
When someone breaks your heart
Can they hear the pain
Or does your heart cry out in vain

People so calloused and so cruel
Have they broken so many
They forget all the rules
To protect something so strong
And yet so fragile
Takes a person with devotion
A person with character

So this is to all
Take warning
Take heed
Don’t give something so precious
For someone to bleed
Your heart just can’t sit alone on a shelf
For to love the right one
Brings abundant wealth

In high school hearing Poe's Tell Tale Heart out loud was intense... but I never thought about my own heart or love... Your poem is wonderful. I'm so glad you wrote this and I found it. I like the ending stanza...beautiful images. I'll take the warning and heed to "heart." PS: thank you for your kind comment on my poem.
