The Baby's Smile
It gave more mileage than it promised
with that first delight;
I could not let it go, for there
implicit in its first appearance
was a cautious pathway
for a newborn light that crept
(though with a stunning flash)
upon my morning reverie with chills
of joy--yet centuries of mystery.
From where did it emerge?
What ragged saint in sagging skins
first saw it, dreamed its origins
within him, first found himself aware
that love alone defined
its gracious gift?
That was the plus that unfolded
in an old man who saw on facebook
his grandaughter-in-law's
photographic greeting to the world
on a Sunday morning!
