The Asking Price

You can’t have character and an easy life

Despite the effort to avoid pain and strife

It can hollow you out seeking paradise

Irrevocable setbacks are the asking price

I'm gonna stick with George Burns, whom I once heard quip: "I've been filthy rich and dirt poor. I'll take filthy any day." (OK. I lied. It wasn't old George who said it; 'twas I). Keep smiling, Gershon

"Irrevocable setbacks" seems a very high price. I feel free verse should be broken down there are so many poems that deserve a better description.

Thanks for reading, Alison. This one definitely is close to a few formats but doesn't exactly fit. Appreciate the comment.
