The Addict and the Surgeon

She never thought that she would wear a scar,
She never knew the surgeon would go so far
She never thought the hands she trusted most
Would leave a scar she never chose

Something inside her changed over time
For a piece of her she could not find
As trust began to feel incomplete
What once embraced her was now bittersweet

And the flash backs of that morning replays
Where regression resurrected former ways
In a split second, patience was gone
And in a split second, she was no longer strong

And since that time and on that day
She asked herself why things had to be this way
She remembered who she used to be,
Before fear began emerging loudly
The bone has mended and healed with time,
But the heart remained wounded from the crime
The heart tries to forget by drugging away,
But the mind remembers it every day

She mourns the bravery she once knew,
Who believed her strength could pull her through
She mourns the circle she once held so tight,
For they all disappeared on her that night.

But though a large fragment of her has died,
There was a remnant of her she took in her stride
Like a candle shining through the night
She keeps alive her stubborn light

The prescription reminds her of the loss
And the scar of the truth and the exorbitant cost
Released from a past with physical pain
In an attempt to heal once again
