The Abyss
Beyond the known likes the unknown;
That, darkened abyss where,
nothing seem real until it’s experienced.
Tomorrow hides there;
huddled in a black crevice and ready to spring on cue.
Everyone will experience her secrets when,
she decides to reveal them.
Sometimes this cruel mistress preys on,
those least expecting it;
she may tempt first;
her attractive freebies usually,
aren’t worth taking.
The abyss also harbors the dark side of the human;
choices lie there which,
turn a human into a hero or a monster.
Some choose the hero within and fate steps in to hail them.
Others choose the monster; no glory hails a monster;
they seal their own fate in empty darkness and
can never crawl out.
The labyrinthine abyss feeds on human ego;
gnawing away everything, including the soul.
Heroes are the only ones to,
Escape…their taste is bitter to the abyss’s palate.
Monsters love control;
once relegated to the abyss they,
can only terrorize and destroy before they are
devoured and they love targeting heroes.
On earth, heroes are that coveted, bull’s-eye;
the monsters take aim and fire away but,
they never realize that,
taking down a hero always backfires.
When it does; they abyss dines heartily.
