The Abundant Life

The billionaire sits in his mansion.
Always he thinks of getting ahead.
   Some influencers greedily count
the number of comments left in their thread.

Guys and gals go out each night on the prowl,
searching to fill the void in their heart.
All kinds of people, some wealthy, some poor,
with addictions, keep tearing their own lives apart.

Stars and celebrities strutting their stuff
chase after triumphs that quickly pass by.
The lonely, depressed and greatly oppressed
spend long hours aching or wishing to die.

So many people live sad shallow lives
     pursuing fantasies, getting nowhere.
Meanwhile, others who may not have much,
start out each day with a smile and a prayer.

How do some people with gratitude live?
What secret have they that others have not?
And what is our purpose? Perhaps could it be
the answer’s found simply in what we have sought?

What you say in this poem in some way applies to most people in the western world. The secret? From your writings, I know you have found it.

It doesn't take much to know what I mean. You know because you love the source from which light flows!

an incisive, introspective way to express the frailties of urban life which seems to weigh spirituality down... great work, andie!

Very nicely done I like the rhythm a lot and I do think we should be grateful for what we have since even the average person in a developed country is quite blessed again a job well done

Dear Andrea, what a wonderful, timely, incisive critique of modern culture's greatest illusion. When people fail to cultivate intrinsic meaning or spiritual connection, the psyche instinctively substitutes secondary rewards, net worth, social media engagement, sensory thrills on the prowl, or compulsive consumption. I really like the clean, classic ballad meter and the rhythmic momentum of an accessible modern hymn. Sharp, compassionate, and beautifully illuminating work, Andrea. Blessings, Daniel

Thanks, Daniel. Wish I could have done this more poetically. Certain topics just grab me more than others. I am glad you found some good things about it.
