That's Not God

"God is love"
I've heard it said,

And to better understand
What they meant

I tried to see the ways in which
People have claimed to love each other.

They said to me,
"Do you see? do you see?"

And I whispered to myself,
"That's not God."

"That's some dead and rotting tree
Turning to golden dust
Before washing out to sea."

"That's some brief and momentary spark
Rising up out of the ashes
And up into oblivion."

You, vast and wasted world, are a liar.
