Urban Sonnet
Invented by: Laura Loo. Sonnet form, with 10 syllables per line and a rhyme scheme of: ABABBB- CDCDDD- EFEFFF-GG
We're all environmentally aware,
applying sunscreen when out in the sun,
yet we abuse Nature with little care.
And we reject blame for the damage done
slaughtering wild animals, sparing none,
using nets, traps, and the range of a gun.
Earth is our evolutionary home;
its flora and fauna connect us all,
down to every last gene and chromosome.
Gleaning the planet's bounty, we feel small,
and without limits, greed marks our downfall,
sacrificing wildlife for urban sprawl.
We're part of an ecological web;
cut one thread, and life starts to unravel;
and things we thought would last forever, ebb.
Man's mind fuels His desire to travel
off-world, yet first, He must address His part
in the rape of the world, He tore apart,
it's not too late; there is still time to start.
Scientists speak of terraforming Mars,
and yet, say naught about gas-guzzling cars.
