Terraforming Mars

We're all environmentally aware
enough to use sunscreen out in the sun:
yet we abuse Nature with little care.
And we reject blame for what we have done.
Killing all the animals, sparing none;
using nets, traps, and the range of a gun.
Earth is our evolutionary home
its flora and fauna affect us all,
down to every last gene and chromosome.
We glean the planet's bounty, claiming all;
ensuring greed will be our downfall,
devastating wildlife for urban sprawl.
We're linked by an ecological web;
cut one thread, and we diminish our worth:
and the tides of fortune will start to ebb.
Progress fuels our desire to leave Earth
without even acknowledging our part,
in the rape of the world we tore apart:
but it's not too late, we just have to start.
Scientists dream of terraforming Mars,
yet stay silent about gas-guzzling cars.
