Tender Loving Care

The valiant struggle is o'er, the billowing smoke has dissipated.
The clash of steel is a horrid memory for those who participated.
Weary soldiers muster, the Captain says, "Boys, you've made me proud!"
But when the roll was called, a comrade was missing from the crowd.

Hark, a sobbing moan is heard from the recent field of strife.
Alas, life is ebbing from a buddy who is nearing eternal life.
His closest friend holds his hand and clasps him to his breast.
Quietly say, "Brother, God knows you did your very best!"

The silent group tenderly carries him to a place for repose.
Dreaded duty tho' it be, belongings must be removed from his clothes.
There's his dog-eared Bible marked at the Twenty-third Psalm.
What comfort it must have given him, that eternal message of calm.

Found is an unmailed letter to his beloved Mom and Dad,
Thanking them for their love and moral upbringing as a lad.
Written on the back of a photo of his folks, "God go with you, son."
A photo of his sweetheart, on the back noted, "I love you, hon."

Oh! That those lifeless orbs could see the tender and loving care,
As that selfless band of brothers in their darkest hour of despair,
Honored their gallant comrade who paid the ultimate cost,
To ensure that our precious liberties and freedoms will ne'er be lost!

Great one Robert. I'm glad you are constantly reminding people of our servicemen and their sacrifices. Maybe think of puttin this one in Mac's Contest? -Robert
