Temporary Engagement

Snap!
Crackle!
Pop!

in that order
as
the boy’s
ears
listen and flop.

milk dribbles
down
his silver
spoon

as he leans
into my phone.
youtube
for kids —
a
sunrise obsession.

I
pause
his video
so we can pray.

I ask him
what does he taste
and he says “pop.”

I encourage him
to think,
“no, what does it taste like?”

again, he says, “pop”

I say,
“vanilla?”

he says,
“no, chocolate.”

so now the thought’s complete
and his thumb
harpoons
his magical cartoons.

but that’s fine,
for the
temporary engagement
of the mind
might serve
him mightily
after breakfast.

You have shown us what today's generation is doing, which is "being attached to an electronic something" most of the time. It is amazing how well this came across.

I’m always glad when I have him doing something else!
