Taking the Flack

Yesterday
her nest she made
today inside
three eggs she laid
for three weeks incubation
and then the celebration
but until then
upon her nest
she’ll sit
for her
there’ll be no rest
both day and night
and night and day
for her there is no
time to play
her partner gone
for hours on end
no doubt he’s out
amongst his friends
when he returns
so she can fly
I hear her
talking
whilst she’s walking
up and down
she squawks and walks
up and down
she walks and squawks
he’s in the dog house
so to speak
he’s been too long
he knows he’s wrong
so patiently he sits
whilst taking all her hits
for going out upon the town
she’s giving him
a dressing down
then flying off for food
and drink
back in a hurry
for her eggs
she doth worry
she settles down
he’s on the town
he’ll be taking the flack
when he gets back...

Written 19th May 2020
after witnessing this scene with a pair of black backed gulls taking residence and building a nest - all in full view of my balcony. Yesterday I caught a glimpse of her three eggs, as she began to lay them - Nature truly is magnificent!

Haha, I'm so pleased you enjoyed it John. Two years back I had a nesting pair in the same spot and all three eggs hatched, but only 2 chicks survived. However, it was truly magical to see their progress and when they eventually flew the nest with mother's help, I must confess I was tearful with joy. So I hope this next brood will survive to spread their wings and soar up high. With kindest thoughts dear John from Ann xx

So glad you enjoyed it dear Heidi, I am so looking forward to the hatching and seeing those sweet fluffy chicks, who will be spotty when first born - so cute... I feel so lucky to be watching them so closely. I just hope all goes well. It is always such a joy to see natures miracles and I feel so sad for folk who never lift their eyes further than their phone screens, for they are missing so much! Keep well my friend. With kindest thoughts Ann

Thank you dear Pigeon, good to see you. Yes they truly are a wonderful sight and I can't wait to see the chicks. I had a nesting pair a couple of years ago and watched in awe as those darling chicks fledged. I am one excited 'Mum' to be, haha... hope you are keeping well and safe. With kindest thoughts Ann xx

Yes, I was so excited to see her produce 3 large brown eggs and it was so funny to witness her behaviour when 'the Daddy' arrived home, for she truly looked as though she was reading him the riot act for leaving her so long haha... I am now hoping they will safely hatch as I await their arrival. I am okay Tom, hope you are too dear friend. With kindest thoughts Ann xx
