Sweet Summer Fruit

when the low-hanging fruit
is bitter from the root
there is no reason to pick
for the bitter will stick

when the wrong socket set
slips on the bolt’s head
there is no use to muscle it
for effort cannot make it fit

with the right question asked
the truth is unmasked
the lie is exposed
and the case can be closed

when the sweet summer fruit
tastes wholesome and good
we savour the taste
and forget all the waste

of the time that we spent
on thoughts small and bent
fretting the small
and missing the ball

missing the dance
and blowing the chance
to eat from the buffet
of the One that is the Way
