Summertime Is Here
Summertime is here
And I can already hear the birds singing
The bees buzzing
Travelling from one flower to another
Sucking the nectar they need for their honey
Or rather, our honey
Once we invade their home and take what is theirs
The sun is out to bake my already burnt skin
Making me a shade darker
Turning my caramel-coloured skin
To a dark chocolate ebony beauty
Summertime is here
Streets filled with laughter
Schools out, freedom has arrived
As the children run up and down
Calling out to each other
The tune from the ice cream van invades minds
As people hum to it
Over and over like a broken record
Smiles plastered on their faces
From the pleasure of gently sucking on ice lollies
A welcome relief to dehydrated lips
Summertime is here
Flowers are in bloom
My once dull garden
Now a shade of every colour
Butterfly and ladybug
Alive again
As the earth spins on its rightful axis
Lovers are out
Sharing kisses under big oak tree
A lover’s nest
Their laughter filling the air
As they lay on their blankets
Summertime is here
Achoos and misery befall me
Runny nose, like a water hose
Itchy eyes, an unexpected pleasure
Drowsing me, slipping in and out of consciousness
Summertime is here
And so is my hay fever
