Notes About The Poem

Can Owls Fly in the Rain? An In-Depth Discussion 'A Clever, Highly Intriguing Haibun' Contest  Sponsored by: Hilo Poet Written 1/28/2026

Strange Sound Echoed

Tap, tap, tap at the window, a tree stands; once dusk begins, limbs move in the graphite night. When the rain set in and the wind blew out a breath. I let out a tiny smile as an owl staring in the window silently turned its nose up and around, beat its wings, and made its way through in response to seeing me. Suddenly a strange sound echoed through the room. Tabby cat jumped and fell, landing on all fours, and walked away. Shadows on the floor rose and fell, losing balance on an empty desk and chair and an empty bed. The candle burned out long before all turned quiet. In slumber, Tabby snuggled right into me.

wind blew out a breath
owl awaken in night rain
nurtures stirring hope

Nice! We had an owl stare at my husband through the window. Those owl’s are smart. Don’t mess with them!

I don't think we have owls in Malta. Saw a few in South London. Loved your haibun. Hugs.
