Still Wishing For Peace
I began my walk this morning as I do every day…with one exception…there was a full moon lighting my way.
So as I do every time I chance to see the moon…
I made a wish for peace…and that she would get here soon.
I use to think wishes were to be treasured so I kept mine safe within a jar…
I’d only open it on special occasions like birthdays, rainbows…and shooting stars.
But peace did not blanket the Earth…no matter how many wishes in my jar I ‘d stuff…
which led me to believe…perhaps I wasn’t wishing hard enough.
So I tossed my wishing jar aside and came up with a different plan…
now I wish for peace on everything I can.
I wish for peace on the clouds…on every star I see at night…
I wish for peace in the darkness and on the sun’s first light.
And though I still wish for peace once a year as I blow out the candles on my cake…
I also wish on ladybugs and butterflies…when skipping stones across a lake.
I wish for peace to every God…my wish is nonsectarian…
on the wishbone of a turkey…even though I’m vegetarian.
When I see a white horse…when I cross my fingers…
at the seashore when I pick up an empty shell…
when I find a penny on the ground…or toss one into a wishing well.
It’s true so far I haven’t seen the peace in the world that I’ve been wishing for…
but I shall keep wishing still….
because even if this particular wish doesn’t come true…
perhaps the next one will.
