still the one
* Today would’ve been their 78th anniversary - they made it to 70, and Dad was happily lucid that day. When I wrote this I had no idea how quickly this day would come. I miss them so much - Happy Heavenly Anniversary, Mom and Dad - I love you and miss you. *
~
my dearest Dad and Mom, I must
place pen to page before it’s dust
and tell you, ‘fore the years wind on -
I dread the day you could be gone
your fading bodies speak their tales
of passing time while growing frail
and yet, the worst of aging’s signs -
the dimming fog of brilliant minds
your sinews strained for my behest
to make my life so full and blessed
and now some mem’ries disappear
while you leave slowly, year-by-year
I see some precious moments drain
now gone for good - like weep in rain
but still, your love is strong and wise
it shimmers, deep, in both your eyes
I know that when I see those sparks
your love will shine through any dark
amidst the joys, and yes, some tears
true soulmates - seven tens of years
there's no gift greater, man and wife
than sharing dreams thru all your life
to have true love that's next-to-none
right there beside you, moon and sun
so, please don’t fret the fearful things
I'm here for you - whate'er life brings
you both worked hard to raise me right
now I will shine you through the night
thus, as you did when I was born
should Gabriel blow his final horn -
I'll snug you in my arms, to keep ...
and rock you 'til you're fast … asleep.
