Still Growing

Still Growing

seventy-three and one-half years young
can’t forget the half-don’t want to appear
younger than I actually am

seems like yesterday I was living in
a foster home and working on the farm
and that was fifty-six years ago

my biggest regret was all the
potential friendships I destroyed
because I was an angry person. I
came from a dysfunctional home
where every form of abuse was acceptable
I had PTSD of a sort so the shrink said
which stunted my social skills

my biggest triumph was accepting
Jesus has my savior. I have slowly learned
to forgive others and just as importantly myself
it has been a life long process and my transformation
is not totally finished but I am better than I was.

Now I have very few friends from the past but am
making some new ones while treating people with
respect.

Being content with the way things are is a
wonderful feeling.

Thank you. It was a challenging and intense-emotionally-contest to write for.

Wow. So nice to see that you turned your life around and came to God after all the bad you had to endure. Great job expressing that here. This theme was very hard for me because I could not even fit half my like into the poem I came up with. My husband was raised by a narcissist control freak mother. He was kind of like you used to be. Very angry. But after 50 years marriage, he took has changed for the better!

Thanks Andrea. There was much more that happened to my sibs and I that I didnt put in this poem. Abuse of all types. Sorry to hear how your husband was raised but glad he has changed for the better. I had a lot more I could put into this poem like military service, etc... but I am not good at long poems.
