Starlight

From within a cage overflowing with tears a voice calls. I look out my skin glowing in the darkness. Starlight. One word, scratched upon a sheet of paper. Starlight. I was not trapped in the cage. It was my soul. The ‘me’ that was within my mind. Starlight. My soul peers out between the iron bars. It has no gender. But it has a name. Starlight. My soul is featureless. A vague form neither male nor female but something in between. Starlight. My true name echoes in my head. Starlight. Starlight! I scream it into the void and the iron bars shatter leaving nothing but dust upon the floor and my soul, finally free with a name that feels right. Astrid never fitted me anyway. My name is Starlight. And I am free.
