Spring Dove

On the first day of May it came.
Now, day after day it shows up
to roost in the branches above the feeder,
or splash in the bath you set up
as an offering to its visitation.

Even among the chattering sparrows
that visit our yard the dove remains alone,
and when it coos you imitate the sound,
answering back as if you can understand
the sound of being alone.
