Notes About The Poem

Spring Azure

Celastrina* echo beauty beneath brilliant blue skies,
from first buds of spring until fatal frosty fall,
brighten sea shore and dry desert.
Ant attendants will mind the eggs of each gentle generation;
every egg that is on wild lilac laid,
every egg left on blackberry blossoms,
emerging to spread splendid wings of blue over wonderful woodland,
marvelous mountain streams and sleepy suburbs where humble humans long for escape.
Dainty dogwood and pink pussypaws
will give you needed nectar,
as they grow in mighty mountains
and lavishly landscaped lands.
Next sunny spring your cycle of life will begin brand new,
and your awakened azure will once again flit and flutter
through the tangled tears of my lonely life.

*The scientific name for the Spring Azure butterfly is Celastrina ladon. Another butterfly in this family is the Spring Echo.
