Song of An Ancient Bird

Flying over the
hills
     Soaring over the
valley
    An ancient bird
           flies
In a soft voice
    he begins to sing
He has seen what
     man can do
He knows that the
    world has been
changed
    And he does not
approve
     His wings catch
the wind
       as he sails
Looking down where
       there was once
a forest
He sees the dwellings
        of men
Looking down on the lake
      Where he played as
a hatchling
He sees garbrage strewn
and muddied water
He keeps singing
      and later, tiring
he perches on a
       grey rock
He is old for
 a bird
But he still maintains
      that the will return
When the lake is again clear
And the forest grows again
      He will be happy
to relinquish
     his majestic self
to the winds of time
He is an ancient bird

I think I am an ancient bird, for I cannot stand to see the way garbage and pollution have marred our landscape. Perhaps all that is left is to surrender "to the winds of time." You gave me much to ponder, Matthew. Sad images, but a poignant warning that needs to be heeded before it is too late. Excellent write. Love, Carolyn

He seems way more than a bird. Ancient spirit residing within no doubt. You are forever optimistic as this beautiful, somewhat sad, well written poem leaves me knowing, the beginning of change for the better has begun and will continue. Love, Shar
