Song of a Cherokee Princess -

Cherokee chamber, where a pow wow stampeedes preconceptions of inheritence, from Her beaded neck charms of chance & chains of change glisten from opulent offerings of roots, corn & lavender ablaze on an alter of unworked stone mantled with skins strong beasts knew, She is a " Stomp Dance " Queen with an owl as a friend and a spider as assassin, with rattlesnake ribbons around Her wrists and prayers in Her braids thick with traditions, the walls of Her teepee painted with the pigments of buffalo blood & sunflower pollen, portraying a history hewn from customs known to Spirits and men alike, the " Stomp Dance " Queen speaks for Her People and sings from the stars, I found this Tribe, not in Appalacia nor on a prarrie stage but in the smoke of ceremony, the Cherokee Princess has rattlesnake teeth tied to Her thigh & turtle shells upon Her hips, She played the rabbit on the scene, then the wolf, if you know what I mean, celebrated by the warriors as a tomahawk maker, praised by the medicine men for Her Visions, and feared by the Elders because of wrath that may follow Her steps, the " Stomp Dance " Queen is a Princess, She is a Cherokee with a song Her own - J.A.B.

Sweet song to my ancestors, Justin! This is very descript with her costume of turtle shells and rattlesnake teeth!!! Saving this one for my favs and so tickled that I ran across it at bfast today....my husband giggled and said, "this one reminds me of your mom!" My mom was the ultimate-looking Cherokee woman with her deep dark eyes and high cheek bones...enjoyed! gwendolen

Thnaks for the FAV honor Gwendolen! The "Stomp Dance" Queen's attire is the keystone to the poem, so nice that you recognize that Gwen - I'm glad that this piece is complimentary to your Mother - something interesting to consider is that there are more Native Americans alive today then there were during the colonial conquests of N. America - J.A.B. %

I echo Lizzie's comments below...we still treat our Indians poorly! Shame on us.
Date: 9/13/2012 2:39:00 PM
Sadly, the color and energy of this wonderful vision has faded into the past. Canada has not treated our indigenous people well and now they have no identity and don't fit into our way of life. I love the sounds in this Justin.

I appreciate the historical perspective you present here Elizabeth - A realize that is positive for the traditions of Native Americans is that they had the benefit of having their original customs, unadulterated, preserved on film and with photographs from the mid 19th century through to the 1920's - meaning, their descendants and the world possess actual visual & audio evidence of their People in their natural, ancient state of being, something people of European ancestry do not have - there are no photos or films showing the great ancient German tribes, the Roman, Dravidians, etc..

you make this very real, as if you were right there. WERE you?? I had to see this one because my great great grandma was Cherokee and my mom once likened me to a cherokee princess!!

As a child I attended a few Pow Wows, and with a child's imagination the Indians always seemed like strange and powerful spirits with the way they manuevored and sang - this composition is about a woman I know, half real and half ghost - by all means then Andrea, this piece is ment for you as well - J.A.B.

wow Justin, i'm now re-reading your comments.. I see lots is going on. I see you captured the readers here. God job ;-) i feel a bias experience here. I love the passing stampede image. I see everyone on the bottom is correcting your art.. All i see is beauty within a song you mastered through words. Nice to read this one again... always~ PD

I am not suprised that you have connected with the spirit of this composition PD. - the inspiration is founded on the dangerous enchantment that women in a ritual performance can induce in searching men - I thank you for your respect my Sphinx - J.A.B. %

"Her braids thick with traditions", she sounds like a woman one might find in the smoke of a sweat lodge, where a Shaman presides. Love the energy and velocity contained by this write! With your descriptive imagery, one can almost picture this scene. Nicely done! love, Mikki

I'm glad that you mention velocity, or tempo in regards to this poem Mikki; I wrote this to be more of a song rather than a poem, so tempo was an active element in my creative process here - I'll take this woman anywhere and anyway I can find Her Mikki - I love your insights Mikki! Thanks - J.A.B. %
