Some Kind of Joke

Smiling he cries,
gazing at the beautiful baby
he once considered unwanted
who now gives him plenty of joy.

Sadly she smiles,
reading about a cancer cure,
but too late! having already lost
her man to the dreaded disease.

Is this some kind of a sick joke,
of life giving us different endings?
when sadness we expect, joy we get,
when joy we aim for, sadness results!
