Solitary

A home I knew
was one I don't see now,
and one I have not seen
since I was five.
The sight of it amazed me...

I played in all the downstairs rooms
as well as the large nursery,
and cousins came
and cousins went
while I played solitary.

The windows down were very long
and they were stiff for granny.
She'd ask the maid
to help her out,
while I played solitary.

When I was six, my parents
said they'd fallen out with granny,
so never more
the house I saw,
and I stopped solitary.
