So Near Yet So Far

SO  NEAR  YET  SO  FAR

Here, far from the shelter of shore
And the distant edge of the ocean,
I can feel only quiet and no more
Than the rocking of liquid motion;
      While the vision of life lived passes
      Near with the sea’s swelling masses.

The Atlantic’s unforgiving arms, colder
Than ice, reach over my boat bent awry
From gunwhales submerged under the shoulder
Of waves carrying their heads as high
      As houses with pitching slates grey -
      Filling up my mouth with salt spray.

Sweating brow cooled and dried.
My mother’s hand reaches in the dark.
Dream of life ended has died.
The safety of a trustworthy ark.
      Subsiding in peace I gain the shore:
      Fever dies and calm once more.
