So Much I Never Saw

Beyond her face
was the most amazing sun
I never saw

For I was too struck by her freckles and the
way her hands moved fast and furiously as she
snapped beans or rolled out noodle dough

Beyond her hair
were the loveliest clouds
I never noticed

For I was too busy listening to her stories
clever and funny. They made me laugh
Full out

Beyond her
I saw nothing else
For she was my world
My grandmother, the one who loved me the most.

I try to do better, but when there is a person in my vision, it is all about the person; I see nothing else.

I've read through your new poems, and it seemed to me you would become a fairy in your next life. May I make a wish, Caren? Pls, count all freckles on my face. They say, only a fairy can make it and if she does, a kid will be happy)

I know they already DO feel that way about you. I am a grandma. I know everything now, so do you.

Beautifully done. Wonderful how so few words can paint such a large picture and capture the beauty of your relationship and the depths of your feelings.
